Description:
 

Sampson Flat was named after Jack Sampson, a Monache chief from The Rancheria on Mill Flat Creek.  He led the first white settlers across Kearsarge Pass to Onion Valley. It was first misnamed Samson Flat on the 1916 topo map. Also the Peak was named after him as well.  From Oak to Pine to Timberline by Helen and Forest Clingman

Apparently Sampson Flat was a gathering place for rangers back in 1911. At least William Clingan met with thirty other Forest Service officers there when he first came into the service.  From Oak to Pine to Timberline by Helen and Forest Clingman

Site of one of the biggest gun battles in California and the ending of its biggest manhunt: the capture of Evans and Sontag.

• Hercules Mine (Quartz) at 2,700' with a 60' tunnel, built by S.C. Moore of Dunlap
• Homestake Mine (Placer) at 2,650' by J.N. Albin of Fresno 
• Big Sampson Mine (Quartz), 1 mile west of Sampson Flat, 50' shaft with a vein 3-14' wide
• Gilkie Mine (Placer),  built by S.C. Moore of Dunlap
