Description:

The old brick lighthouse is beautiful on the outside. It is about three stories high. Unfortunately when we visited, there was not much to see or read inside of the old lighthouse. Even the view was restricted to a couple of portholes. You could see into the fensel lens, but not very closely After visiting a lighthouse in Oregon, this one needs some development to make it a worthwhile attraction.

]We also did walk the breakwater out to the new lighthouse. The walk is pleasant. You cannot go into the new lighthouse, nor is it very big.

The construction of the lighthouse began in 1891 and was completed the following year, with the light being lit for the first time on April 14, 1892. The first Two Harbors keeper was Charles Lederle and there were normally three keepers assigned to make sure the light was lit every day. The Lighthouse was built to provide safe passage into the Agate Bay Harbor during the early 20th century, as Two Harbors was a major shipping point for the iron ore of the Mesabi Range.

Description:

Full names is James J. Hill Stone Arch Bridge. We walked across it and found that even on a weekday, the bridge was full of activity.

From Wikipedia: former railroad bridge crossing the Mississippi River at Saint Anthony Falls in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the only arched bridge made of stone on the entire Mississippi River. It is the second oldest bridge on the river next to Eads Bridge. The bridge was built to connect the railway system to the new Union Depot, which at that time was planned to be built between Hennepin Avenue and Nicollet Avenue. The bridge was completed in 1883, costing $650,000 at the time ($22.5 million today).

I found the Skyways a wonder of being able to walk through private buildings in a public way. Then going from building to building, crossing streets without stopping for lights or worried about cars hitting you. I do not know how I would feel if I lived here for 5 years. Sherri tolerated my enthusiasm.

From North Shore Trail: Silver Cliff is the highest bluff rising out of Lake Superior. In 1923 builders carved Highway 61 out of the cliffside 125 feet above the lake. In 1994, after three years of blasting and the removal of a million cubic yards of rock, the tunnel was completed as a safer route. To walk the old route, park at the wayside rest on the northeast side of the tunnel and walk the half-mile paved path that follows the old highway bed at cliff’s edge. Take in the wide open views of Lake Superior.

We went to Minnesota mostly because we had a companion fare and because our daughter was running a half marathon in Duluth. There was nothing really calling us to the city and once we got there, there was nothing which said we had to go and see or else we are missing out and will regret for the rest of our lives. What we found out is that this is a delightful city which has made the most of its resources and its natural beauty. We are glad we came.

We went through the museum, which is a pay item. Lots of explanation of how wheat is milled and the effect of the river and surrounding areas had on why mills were placed here. Then why the mills left. There is an elevator ride which takes you through various floors, explaining processes. Then lets you out on the top where you can view the areas east of the Mississippi.

The museum is in the remains of a mill which caught fire and exploded in the 1990's. It has been in operations for about 20+ years as of 2026.

On the Pigeon River with half in the United States and half in Canada. There are three viewing decks on the United States side. Also there are other falls further up the Pigeon River. It is said to be the highest falls in Minnesota.

From Wikipedia: The English name for the Gooseberry River first appeared in 1823 on a map made by Major Stephen Harriman Long during his expedition of the Canada–US border region. There are two competing theories about the origin of the Gooseberry's name. The Ojibwe name for the river is zhaaboominikaani-ziibi, which translates to River Place of Gooseberries. Alternatively, the name has been taken as a translation of the name of the French explorer Groseilliers. The name Reviere de Groseilliers appeared on early French maps of the area as early as 1670, and Groseilliers visited the North Shore region in the 1660s.[3] The puzzle of the true origin has not been solved conclusively, and the state park lists both as plausible explanations.[

When we went to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, there were painting about St Anthony of Padau. He was the first modern day black who would be canonize by the Catholic Church. There are many other things named after him in this area.

From Wikipedia: located at the northeastern edge of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, was the only natural major waterfall on the Mississippi River. Throughout the mid-to-late 1800s, various dams were built atop the east and west faces of the falls to support the milling industry that spurred the growth of the city of Minneapolis. In 1880, the central face of the falls was reinforced with a sloping timber apron to stop the upstream erosion of the falls. In the 1950s, the apron was rebuilt with concrete, which makes up the most visible portion of the falls today. A series of locks were constructed in the 1950s and 1960s to extend navigation to points upstream.
