Description:

I woke up at 0530 and did my lightning inquiry-there was none. That is what I was expecting based upon yesterday’s experience. After doing that inquiry, I laid in my bag for a while, just enjoying the feeling. Around 0615 I got up and had my granola breakfast. I think I over ate. Then I washed up and packed up what I will not need today and took it down to the car. A gray truck did circle around the lookout, but left before I went down. Afterwards, I went for a short walk.

When I returned, it was closing in on 0900, so I got ready for the new day at Delilah. I did the weather. There is a lot of haze/smoke to the north, almost obscuring Rogers Ridge. But in the other directions I have at least 9 miles of visibility. I do a scan and then, like Buck Rock, I go into service with limited visibility.

Where did Roger's Ridge go to? Visibility 5 miles, optimistically

And as I was doing my next scan, I was thinking about how we go into service here: Porterville – Delilah, Inservice. There are some Facebook friends which seem to get a thrill out of showing political people in drag. I wonder what they would say if they knew that in some circles I am known as Delilah.

Smoke up the Kings River towards Cedar Grove

Enough of that, I would rather concentrate on my normal lookout duties, interspersed with some thoughts of the grander of what I can see up here. Of course, this morning, some of that grandeur continues to be obscured by smoke. Fortunately, it is not dense enough to affect my breathing here.

The morning passes with what is considered excitement here. Buck Rock asks me if I know who the duty officer is? I was about to ask her the same thing. We agree that since Division 3 is active, he is the one. We both have limited visibility due to the Coffee Pot fire. But she is wondering how a fire which is a little above 1,000 acres can be sending so much smoke our way. The other “excitement” is that Sierra does their 1100 lookout check in. And now it is back to washing windows.

Looking west in the afternoon

After more scans and more refreshing myself with the area, I have lunch. Lunch is remarkably like my dinner last night, while tonight’s dinner will be like yesterday’s lunch. Both are quick and easy to make. After lunch, I do another scan and lay down for a few minutes-never going to sleep. Buck Rock calls me again on R5. She wants to know if I can tell her who is her relief this weekend? That one is an easy one, Jessi. Now back to the routine.

As escorted in, I get escorted out by some beefy mammals
At 1600, Sierra did their lookout check in and I responded appropriately. Now it is two hours until the end of my shift and time up at Delilah for this term. So I start getting stuff ready for my exit while doing the usual lookout duties. At 1700, I mop clean the countertops, put away my stuff, then clean the floors. Then at 1750, I go out of service with Sierra and 1755 with Porterville.

After taking stuff down to the car, I am able to leave about 1810. But I got about a quarter mile down the road and had a nagging feeling that I forgot something. In this case, it was that I forgot to do something, like leave the keys to the lookout behind for the next person. I go back up, and stash the keys and leave. I listen to the DNC on the way back home and get to my house a bit before 2000. The shower felt good.
