Description:
Named by Frank M. Lewis in the’70s. (Frank M. Lewis.) From Place Names of the Sierra Nevada by Francis P. Farquhar
The route was down Sugarloaf Creek, across Roaring River near Scaffold Meadow. Brewer, King, and the Whitney Survey reports call Roaring River the south fork of Kings River. We have come down into a deep valley, where it is warmer and there is good grass. We are still camped high, however—about 7,500 feet. A fine breeze plays up the valley, very pleasant, but it makes it hard to write—it flutters the paper and gives much trouble. The desolate granite peaks lie in sight—bare granite and glistening snow. It freezes every night. From Up and Down California by William Brewer, Book 5 Chapter 2
...by ten o'clock
were looking across a wide sweep of pine country to the long crest of
the Great Western Di vide. Between us and it intervened low, rolling
mountains covered with timber. To the left, many miles, and beyond a
ridge cleft to admit the passage of Roar ing River, we divined the
tremendous plunge of the Kings River Canon. To the right, again many
miles, we discerned the sheer, bald granite peaks, worn smooth by
glacial action, capped and streaked by snow, over which our way must
lead were we to gain the canon of the Kaweah. From The Pass by Stewart Edward White, chapter Roaring River
About
three in the afternoon we came out over Roaring River. It was well
named. The waters dashed white and turbulent far below us, filling the
forest with their voice. From The Pass by Stewart Edward White, chapter Roaring River
Also there is a whole chapter in The Pass by Stewart Edward White called The Permanent Camp where he spend ten days camped around Roaring River because a horse had gone lame.
