Description:
This is a historical designation. There is a four-wheel drive road off of Davis Road which goes to this area.
Sampson Flat was named after Jack Sampson, a Monache chief from The
Rancheria on Mill Flat Creek. He led the first white settlers across
Kearsarge Pass to Onion Valley. It was first misnamed Samson Flat on the
1916 topo map. Also the Peak was named after him as well. From Oak to Pine to Timberline by Helen and Forest Clingman
