Place: CA, Clouds Rest

Clouds Rest-9,934' (Tenaya Lake,Mt Lyell)
(37.7677027,  -119.4893270)

Description:
“Because upon our first visit the party exploring the ‘Little Yosemite’ turned back and hastened to camp upon seeing the clouds rapidly settling down to rest upon that mountain, thereby indicating the snowstorm that soon followed.” (Bunnell: Discovery of the Yosemite, 1880, p. 201.—See, also, Biennial Report of the Commissioners to Manage Yosemite Valley, 1889-90, p. 11.)

"'Cloud's Rest ... was so named by a squad from C Company, who had passed up the middle branch [the Merced River], and were turned back by seeing the clouds gather on that peak for a snowstorm that followed that night, the second of our first entrance into the valley." (Bunnell, Report, 11; see also Bunnell, Discovery, 1880, 11) That makes the date of naming March 28, 1851. Clouds Rest was mistakenly called 'Tanaya Peak" on a GLO 1885 plat, surveyed in 1883.
