Robert A Taft Memorial and Carillon-33' (Washington West) (38.8928897, -77.0110873)

Description : Trips : References : Pictures

Description:

This bell tower is not too far away from the Capitol building. With all the other  memorials around the Capitol, it is easy to miss this memorial. That is until its bells play out. The inscriptions say:

  • North: "If we wish to make democracy permanent in this country, let us abide by the fundamental principles laid down in the Constitution. Let us see that the state is the servant of its people, and that the people are not the servants of the state."
  • South: “Liberty has been the key to our progress in the past and is the key to our progress in the future. If we can preserve liberty in all its essentials, there is no limit to the future of the American people.”

Trips:

  • April 3, 2023 - We almost walked right by this memorial, as big as it is, without noticing it. Then we wondered what it was far? Then, who was Robert Taft and was there a connection with President Taft?
