Description:
Peak directly south of Kings River CaƱon above Grand Sentinel. Shown on sketch-map accompanying article by John Muir, A Rival of the Yosemite, in Century Magazine, November, 1891, p. 79. Name subsequently became transposed on maps to peak farther south. From Place Names of the High Sierra (1926) by Francis P. Farquhar

First ascent in July 1895 by Prof. Bolton C. Brown and A. B. Clark. From the description of the ascent by Brown, it was just a stiff hike to the summit from the outlet of Copper Creek.   From A Climber’s Guide to the High Sierra (1954), edited by Hervey H. Voge

From GNIS database:
  • Avalance Peak also called Palmer Peak, but sounds like a different peak than Avalance: Named for Joe Palmer, an early prospector of that region.  At the head of Avalanche Creek, due west of Avalanche Pass and 2.2 km (1.4 mi) southeast of Avalanche Peak.
