Description:
Fort Monroe was named for George F. Monroe, a stage driver for the Yosemite Stage Line. The "fort" was a stage team relay station, and a place where stage line customers and other travelers camped. From Wikipedia

We camped at Fort Monroe, and ate our supper between exclamations at the sunset color on the pines and cedars on the opposite hillside. The level light illuminated the forest with a radiance that was indescribably royal and august, and the great trees stood thoughtful and reverent, ripening their harvest in the golden air. From Yosemite Trails by J Smeaton Chase

From a column by Tony Krizan in the Sierra Star, Now it is safe to say that the Pohono Trail and Yosemite Stage Coach Road were at one time joined together. We continued following the road south until it turned east, at that point on the road edge was a pipe extending from the ground almost three feet. From this point we followed the road another 100 yards until the road turned to the right (south).

Directly in front of us on the left side of the road is where Fort Monroe used to be (GPS Latitude 37.71021 and Longitude 119.69517). After 1933 when the Wawona Tunnel was completed Fort Monroe was not needed and the military removed all existing structures. All that is visible today are trees, rocks and ground cover.

After criss-crossing the area I discovered their dump located some 75 off the road. Also just off the road at the bend is a cut-out which I presume was a of a building.

We did not see the three' pipe. But we did see a pipe three inches across on what looked like a clearing. We think this may be the spot. Nov 12, 2014.
That was not the spot. Ft Monroe is above Inspiration Point, about half a mile. There is a 4' pipe coming out of cement.  March 25, 2015
