Description:
“From its fancied likeness to a gigantic watch-tower, is called ‘Sentinel Rock’.” (Whitney Survey: Geology, 1865, p. 412.) “The present ‘Sentinel’ they [the mission Indian guides] called ‘Loya,’ a corruption of Olla (Oya), Spanish for an earthen water-pot. The mountain tribes use, instead, a long-pointed basket, shaped somewhat like that rock, which the basket is supposed to resemble.” (Bunnell: Discovery of the Yosemite, 1880, p. 212. See, also, p. 66.) “The peak called by us the ‘South Dome’ has since been given the name of ‘Sentinel Dome’.” (Bunnell: Discovery of the Yosemite, 1880, p. 212.)

This was the first "Sentinel" feature named: the others derive from it.) (Bunnell, Discovery, 1880, 212) "If the name comes from the Spanish word Ho-yas, holes in rocks, the sentinel designated the place of the acorn mortar mills, or perhaps, the obelisk form was supposed to resemble the stone pestle for pulverizing the acorns used by the Indians as food. (Bunnell, Report, 12) "The peak called by us the 'South Dome' has since been given the name of 'Sentinel Dome'." (Bunnell, Discovery, 1880, 212)
The creek was called "Lola Brook" on the Wheeler Survey map of 1883.
The rock and the dome was named on the King and Gardiner map of 1865.
The creek acquired its present name on the first USGS map of the valley,
1907, and the fall on the fourth edition, 1927 (YNP)
Loya. Sentinel Rock; means an Indian camp, or signal station, probably.
