Description:
From Mindat: Discovered in 1881 by Aaron and Rosie Winters. Operated during the period 1882 to 1890. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. The Winters sold their claim to W.T. Coleman for $20,000. Ulexite was dissolved in boiling water. When the solution cooled, borax was precipitated. It was too hot in the summer for the solution to cool sufficiently to produce borax, so operations were moved to a deposit near Amargosa during the summer months. The ore was hauled by 20 mule teams 165 miles to Mojave.
From the California Office of Historic Preservation: In 1881 Aaron Winters discovered borax on the marsh near this point. He later sold his holdings to W. T. Coleman of San Francisco, who built the Harmony Borax Works in 1882 and commissioned his superintendent, J. W. S. Perry, to design wagons and locate a suitable route to Mojave. The work of gathering the ore (called 'cottonball') was done by Chinese workmen. From this point, 20-mule teams transported the processed borax 165 miles to the railroad until 1889.
