Description:
Hope Valley lies beneath, green and lovely—high mountains, eleven thousand feet high rising beyond it. Hope Valley was named by the Mormon party after crossing the Sierra from Tragedy Springs, “the spirits of the explorers who first discovered it reviving when they arrived in sight of it” (ibid., p. 239). Frémont had passed this way in February, 1844.m From Up and Down California by William Brewer, Book 4 Chapter 5
