Places: CA-Shorty's Cabin

Shorty's Cabin (Sphinx Lakes)
(long, lat)

Description:

Born around Three Rivers. Was the last "mountain man" in the area. Trapped furs and stuff. Originally was a mechanic, but alcohol got the better of hi, So he decided the best way to conquer drink was to remove himself from drink. So he went up into the mountains and became a trapper. He built cabins about a day apart in the Roaring River/Boulder Creek areas. He expanded out to Vidette Meadow and the upper Bubbs Creek. The typical cabin was 6'x10' and 5.5' high. Shorty was about 5'4". Also there was a chimney at one end and a bunk at the other. Shorty tried to make the cabins unnoticeable. When the area became part of the park, he moved on the the North Fork of the Kings. He continued to do this into the late 1950's. He died in 1961.
