"Tululowehack. The canon of the South Fork of the Merced, called the Illilouette in the California Geological Report, that being the spelling given by Messrs. King and Gardiner,--a good illustration of how difficult it is to catch the exact pronunciation of these names. Mr. Hutchings spells it Tooluluwack." (Whitney, Yosemite Guide-Book, 1870, 17) 

"The cliff along the east side of Indian Canyon was known as Le-ham-ite, and designated the place of the arrow wood, as we might say, the oaks."(Bunnell, Report, 1889-90, 11) 

On the Wheeler Survey map of 1883, the creek is named "Little Winkle Branch." Variations of that name were on LeConte's map of 18983, and on McClure's maps of 1895 and 1896. The first five editions of the Yosemite Valley maps (1907-1929) called it "East Fork of Indian Creek." It changed to its present name on the sixth edition, 1938, and Lehamite Falls" was added.
