World War I Memorial-16' (Washington West) (38.8959327, -77.0328604)

Description : Trips : References : Pictures

Description:
This is a recent memorial, which seems strange, since World War I was fought over a hundred years ago. It was dedicated in April 2021. It is built on what was known as Pershing Square. What grabs me is the depiction of the mural which is being created. It shows the Everyman aspect of the War. From the time a soldier leaves home to when he returned back. The mural reflects off of the pond.

There is many aspects which reflect how the Vietnam Memorial affect people There is the starkness and simpleness of the memorial, giving a person time to reflect about the war and the consequences of it.

Trips:

  • March 24, 2023 - Visited the White House Visitor Center and the Museum of American History. But we found several other areas of interest along the way.

World War II Memorial-0' (Washington West) (38.8892392, -77.0403759)

Description : Trips : References : Pictures

Description:

This was our first memorial in DC. It affected me a lot more than I thought it would be. Maybe because this was my parents war. But just being there made me realize the doubt which I have to their generation.

The memorial is laid out in two halfs. One half lays out the battles in the Atlantic; the other in the Pacific.  The whole plaza is surrounded by the flags of the states. In the middle is a fountain. On the far site of the plaza is a small water fall, looking like it comes from the Lincoln Reflection Pool-but it does not.

A memorial well worth going, if for no other reason to honor those who have fallen.

Description:

This plain black slack of stone with names etched in it has the power to elicit emotions, even with those who did not serve. So much lost for so little gain. Maybe because this was the war of my generation, but there is a strong attachment to this wall.

Or maybe because we know people whose lives were interrupted and cut short because of the war.

Description:

Union Station. This is the place which we first saw when we came to DC. We had gotten off of the Metro and when through a maze of escalators and halls under construction. This led us to the cavernous foyer. I made a note to explore further. Also because I wanted to find the Phillip Randolph Memorial which is in the station. But we could never find it,even with being in the station a couple of times.

Read the DC on Foot article for a lot of info on Union Station

Description : Trips : References : Pictures

Description:

This bell tower is not too far away from the Capitol building. With all the other  memorials around the Capitol, it is easy to miss this memorial. That is until its bells play out. The inscriptions say:

  • North: "If we wish to make democracy permanent in this country, let us abide by the fundamental principles laid down in the Constitution. Let us see that the state is the servant of its people, and that the people are not the servants of the state."
  • South: “Liberty has been the key to our progress in the past and is the key to our progress in the future. If we can preserve liberty in all its essentials, there is no limit to the future of the American people.”

Trips:

  • April 3, 2023 - We almost walked right by this memorial, as big as it is, without noticing it. Then we wondered what it was far? Then, who was Robert Taft and was there a connection with President Taft?

Description:

One of the Capitol guides noted this building is a pretty recent addition to the Capitol area. It was authorized in the 1920's and constructed in the 1930's, during the Great Depression.

One of the things which strikes me is the words on top of the building Justice for All. Like much of DC and our Nation, I now think of this as aspirational rather than a fact which we are falling short of. See the Architecture Guides for the representations of the figures on top of the building.
