- Bumpass Mountain: :In Lassen Volcanic National Park, 1.3 km (0.8 mi) southeast of Lake Helen and 3.2 km (2 mi) south of Lassen Peak.
- Also called Bumpas Mountain as ratified in 1927, but changes to Bumpass in 1948. Citation U.S. Geological Survey. Geographic Names Phase I data compilation (1976-1981). 31-Dec-1981. Primarily from U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale topographic maps (or 1:25K, Puerto Rico 1:20K) and from U.S. Board on Geographic Names files. In some instances, from 1:62,500 scale or 1:250,000 scale maps.
- Bumpass Hell.
- Named for Kendall Vanhook Bumpass, discoverer of the hot spirngs.
- In Lassen Volcanic National Park, on the south base of Bumpass Mountain, 35.2 km (22 mi) south fo Lassen Peak.
- On the USGS decision card, there is a note indicating this probably started being in use when some local wages got together
- There was two sets of discussions:
- What was the proper spelling of Bumpass' name: Bumpa, Bum[pas, or Bumpass-legal documents support Bumpass.
- The appriopriateness of the term Hell. Local usage had been Hell since at least 1884. In 1948 it was decided that it was ok to use.
- From a document from the AP, with the line: THE PARK SERVICE NOTED THAT AS LONG AS THE BOARD OF NAMES HAD TO CHANGE BUMPAS TO BUMPASS ANYHOW, IT MIGHT AS WELL MAKE HELL OFFICIAL AT THE SAME TIME.
