From GNIS:
- Named for Dr. James Caples (died 1915), who constructed a station near the lake in the 1850's that became a regular stopping place on the wagon road to California.
- Formed by damming Caples Creek 1.1 km (0.7 mi) east of Kirkwood and 27.2 km (17 mi) south of Lake Tahoe
