Description:

The name appeared on the Mariposa 30' map, 1912, as a replacement for the original name, "Wamelo Rock." That name probably was given by the Whitney Survey: it is on Hoffman's map of 1873. There is no explanation of its meaning.

"I caught sight of a lofty granite dome, called Wa-mello by the Indians looming into the free sky far above the forest ...." (John Muir, writing from "Fresno Grove of Big Trees" in the San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin, September 21, 1875) The name "Fresno Grove" no longer exists. (See Nelder Grove.) • This mountain was originally known as Wamelo Rock "by the Indians of the area. No one knows what the word meant. However, this name is all but forgotten by everyone not specifically interested in the history of the area. Every one knows and uses the name Fresno Dome in common conversation. There is a well-known Fresno Dome Campground nearby. Based on local knowledge, use, and acceptance of the name, I recommend Wamelo Rock be changed to Fresno Dome.
