Description:

From Wikipedia: This hard lava cap has retarded erosion in many places and possibly explains why Manly Beacon, the high outcrop to the right, is much higher than other portion of the badlands. Manly Beacon was named in honor of William L. Manly, who along with John Rogers, guided members of the ill-fated Forty-niners out of Death Valley during the gold rush of 1849.

From GNIS:
  • Manly Falls
    • Named for William Lewis Manly, who played a large part in the Death Valley Party of 1849, and who refers to this fall in the account of that expedition in "Route of the Manly Party of 1849-1850 in Leaving Death Valley for the Coast", John E Wolff, 1931.
    • On the west slope of the Panamint Range, the most northern, and highest of five, falls 1.6 km (1 mi) of the mouth of the Redlands Canyon.
    • From the Decision Card: For detailed description of this feature, see Route of the Manly Patty of 1849-50 in Leaving Death Valley for the Coast, John E. WoIff, 1931.
    • Also on the Decision Card:  fall_about 26 feet,  the upper..and highest of five falls within a mile of the mouth of Redlands Canyon, western slope of Panamintr Range, near lat. 35°, 56' 5N  long. 117° 1' 8 W.
  •  Manly Peak
    • Much of the same background as on Manly Falls
    • Decision Card:altitude about 7000 feet, Inyo County Calif, at the entrance to Redlands Canyon from Butte Valley western slope Panamint Range, visible from the floor of Death Valley through the notch made by Anvil Springs Canyon, near lat. 35° 55' N., long. 117° 07'.7 W.
      • and which may have been the "high precipitous peak" mentioned by Manly in traversing Butte Valley.
      • Shown unnamed on: 1915-U.S.G.S., Searles quad. and 1917-F. Hamilton, Inyo Co.
    • The Sierra Club recommended the name change from Baldy to Manly as being a prominent peak and near the route Manly rescued pioneers by.
    • Documents and pictures can be found at:

    • Also called:
      • Baldy Peak-Sowaal, Margaret. Naming the Eastern Sierra. Bishop, California: Chalfant, 1985.
      • Granite Peak Number 2-Palmer, T.S. Place Names of the Death Valley Region in California and Nevada. Morongo Valley, California: Sagebrush Press, 1980.
      • Manly Dome-Palmer, T.S. Place Names of the Death Valley Region in California and Nevada. Morongo Valley, California: Sagebrush Press, 1980.
      •  From a letter, the name Finette  may have been considered as well.
  • Manly Pass
    • From Decision Card, Manly went through this pass on his way to resuce the pioneers.
