We came down to visit Rachel yesterday-is that a big disingenuous? Sherri wanted to attend a Holy Post live podcasting in Long Beach. I think we would have done down sooner, but this kills two birds with one stone.
The Richard Milhous Nixon Presidential Library is about an hour’s drive away. I suggested this was a place to spend the day while Rachel is working. Sounded good. My confession: I was a teenager in the late 60’s and a young adult in the early 70’s. Nixon in my mind was a villain. Watergate just confirmed it. It was a turbulent time and I was draftable and Nixon seemed to be the person who was representative of all which was wrong with the United States.
We leave Rachel’s a little after 10 and head to Costco. Sherri would like to try out the Costco car wash, but it is broken, So we only willful up with gas. We can now make it home without stopping at the Costco Bakersfield.
It takes us close to noon to get to the Nixon Library. There is a $25 per person admittance charge to the library, but if you buy a $100 membership to the National Archive Foundation, then entrance is free. Since we are planning on visiting the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in March, we will at least break even.
The first thing we do, after visiting the facility, is view a 13 minute video which summarizes Nixon life. It does not minimize Watergate, rather it leads with that and then talks about his accomplishments. This is the method behind how the Library is laid out. For the most part not minimizing his defects, while emphasizing his contributions, achievements and intelligence. Here are some of the things which impressed me:
Nixon was said to be personally an introvert, but politically and extrovert.
The chaos which Nixon stepped into as President.
Then again, the strict law enforcement he advocated, I did not appreciate.
There was an emphasis on the environment, such as the EPA was created and the Clean Air Act.
Vietnam. He came in saying he would end it, instead he expanded it to include Cambodia and Laos.
Of course, there was China and the revolution that made in the world.
And there was Watergate.
With all of what Nixon had going and accomplished, how come he risked it all on a two-bit burglary and cover up? I do not think that was ever answered in what I saw.
We left about 2:15, hoping to beat the LA traffic. We arrived at Rachel’s place about 3:30-most of the trip was pretty easy, but there was some traffic-this is LA after all. I rested for a while. Rachel fixed us a chicken tortilla dinner. Pretty tasty. A little before 6, we go to Grace Long Beach church to be at one of Sherri’s Holy Post events.
We get there about 6:40 and go in. Evidently we are a novelty and may have traveled the furthest being from Fresno. The discussion people are Skye Jethani, Kaitlyn Schiess and Kara Powell. The Holy Post is a podcast Sherri listens to; I get the residual benefits of listening to it as Sherri has it on a speaker. They advertise themselves as producing smart and entertaining content that helps people think Christianly and live faithfully in our increasingly post-Christian culture-that is a mouthful. The event is at Grace Long Beach church and begins shortly after 7:00pm. The discussion is about how parents and the Church can maintain and enhance the trust and the interest of minors. By the way, the structure of the discussion is styled as being among friends talking about a subject. Afterwards, they took questions from the audience. Some of the things of interest were:When talking with people, anybody, ask questions, listen to the answer. Be less directive. This was said in the context of parents and their children.
They used the term generous orthodoxy. I liked that term because it indicated to me that our thinking should be as flexible as God’s is.
They paraphrased Brenee Brown: It is every day Actions which build trust.
I mangled this in my notes, but Rachel corrected them for me: Young people do not want cool people. Young people gravitate towards the oldest person in the room who takes them seriously.
If the end of the story is promise, then I have permission to participate in the promise-Kaitlyn
Kara Powell has a program called 10x10 which will be coming out in January. It is about everyday mentoring
Skye noted that the 2024 election will force Christian leaders to make decisions.
God judges nations on how they treat foreigners- I had already come to this conclusion.
We get back to Rachel’s house about 9:30 and then talk to about 10:30. It is good just to talk and sort things out. Now on to bed.
