Places-CA, Glacier Point

Glacier Point (7,214', Yosemite Quad, Half Dome) (37.72705, -119.5749)

The precise origin of the name is not known. Bunnell wrote: "The name of 'Glacier Point' is said to be Pa-til-le-ma, a translation of which I am unable to give." (Bunnell, Discovery, 1880, 213) Clarence King wrote, concerning his activities with the Whitney Survey in 1864, from atop Sentinel Dome : "A little way to the east, and about a thousand feet below the brink of Glacier Point...." (King, 151) But that still doesn't say who named it, or when. However, the name is on the King and Gardiner map of 1865. One might note that it is a different sort of name than all the other in and around Yosemite Valley up to that time. It is scientific/geologic: all the others are romantic, quasi-circumstantial evidence seems to point to someone on the Whitney Survey as the namer. (YNP)
