San Jose Airport
Five in the morning is a bit early. But that is what time I got up. I guess I was a bit apprehensive as I did not sleep well last night. We get ready and meet Kevin and David in the hotel lobby at 5:30. Holiday Inn Express has fixed us a breakfast box: milk, yogurt, corn flakes, bagel with crème cheese, and a hard boiled egg. Not bad.

We get out of the hotel by 20 til 6. David and I drop Kevin and Sherri off to check the bags while David and I get parking for our vehicles. AM Airport Parking shuttles us back to the airport, where we arrive with about a 30 minute wait. The TSA line goes quickly. As well as our Hawaiian PreClear gets us all set up.

The Alaska Airline flight leaves a bit late. The flight is uneventful. I get a large part of my reading down-Lighting Down by Jame Clavin. Also read through my notes on The Premeditation by Michael Lewis. Then I start reading our April Book Group’s book Putting It Together by James Lapine. With that, the five hour flight passes by tolerable well. We get in a few minutes early into Honolulu.

In Honolulu, we have a four hour layover. Instead of flying directly to Kona, Alaska rerouted flights a couple of weeks ago. So we decided to fly to Honolulu then to Kona on Southwest. The plane leaves at 3:35 local time, so we wait around, having lunch-pizza for Sherri and I, Chinese for Kevin and David.

Whale Splash

So we load onto the plane for our 50 minute flight to Kona. When we land, Kevin and David get the rental car while Sherri and I collect the checked luggage. On the way to Kevin’s condo, David is constantly scanning the ocean-this will be a theme for our stay. Lo and behold, he spots the splash of a whale.

We get to the condo and unpack. David cooks us a dinner and we are content. Now to get adjusted in knowing that 7pm is really 9pm California time.

Background

Hawaiian PreClear. Thanks to David, we had a pretty good idea of what to do before we got to the airport. The reason why you want this is it makes entry into Hawaii a lot easier in that you do not have to get screened in Hawaii or face with a COVID quarantine.

  • Get vaccinated-we already had. Or at least get COVID tested 72 hours or less before your flight to Hawaii.
  • Get the Clear app for your smart phone
  • Get signed in, then enter your COVID information.
  • Then go to Travel Hawaii web site.
  • Get signed on.
  • Enter your travel information to Hawaii.
  • Connect your Clear information to the Travel Hawaii site.
  • Travel Hawaii will then send you a QR code saying if you are clear to enter Hawaii or do you need to go through a screening or a quarantine period.
  • Show the QR code at the gate and get a wristband saying you are cleared to enter the State of Hawaii.
